Oh my goodness, where do I even BEGIN with my comments here? I sometimes forget that I love historical mysteries, but just last night I realized I have three on my unread shelf that show my attraction to the genre! I read and loved The Widows of Malabar Hill a few years ago and have the next two in that series on my shelf, as well as one I bought ages ago and never read ~ The Betel Nut Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu (set in 1937-38 in Singapore). I also started the Veronica Speedwell and Lady Sherlock series years ago and need to get back to them! Oh, and The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley has been recommended to me umpteen times and it's sitting on my shelf as well :-) As for those Persephone books - how do you keep from just buying ALL of them at once? They're so gorgeous! The corduroys look amazing and now I want them, and I 100% agree about the main character in Colored Television making me anxious! Thanks for an amazing newsletter!

Ooh, The Betel Nut Tree Mystery sounds so good! I read and liked The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie years and years ago but never went on with the series--I tend to be pretty picky about child narrators in adult fiction?

That’s EXACTLY why I haven’t read it yet, Natalie! Keep the kids out of my adult lit 😉

I loooove the Veronica Speedwell series! I’m also taking it slow so I never run out 🤣

I read Colored Television earlier this month and enjoyed it, but yes such a stressful main character! So many wrong (in my opinion) decisions 😂

The Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear is delightful. I audibly screeched in delighted when the next one came up on my library hold list! Also, there is a delight is starting a series that already had many books to look forward to!!

The Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas is simply delectable. I ADORE it. I will definitely be checking out the rest of your recommendations!! Because I am craving good mysteries in the fall, because that’s just the way of it.

This is the perfect reminder to return to Maisie! The second *and* third installments have been languishing on my shelf forever.

I love cozy and historical mysteries especially in the fall. Widows of Malabar Hill is a good series although the romance is veryyy slow which has frustrated me (but seems historically accurate!). Another historical mystery I enjoyed was A Disappearance in Fiji. But I'm now adding Jeannie Lin to my list! And I really really want to visit Persephone 😍

Good to know! I have a soft spot for a slow burn but eventually I *do* need there to be some kissing, haha.
