Use of Weapons sounds like the kind of SF I also enjoy. Do the Culture books have to be read in order or can this be read as a standalone?
You can read it as a standalone--I hadn't read any of the other Culture books before and really enjoyed the way that the book slowly lets you learn more about the civilization and what they're up to.
