Have you read any Rosemary Rogers or Kathleen Woodiwiss? They were romance icons in the early 1970s. I particularly liked Woodiwiss's The Flame and the Flower and The Wolf and the Dove.
Yay romance canon! I am excited about that this year too, so right at the beginning of January I grabbed a Beverly Jenkins book off my shelf and ….that one was not good 😆 But I have read others of hers that are, so I’ll try keep trying. Have you read / listened to this from Shelf Love? https://open.substack.com/pub/shelflovepodcast/p/colonizing-history-historical-romance?r=nuwng&utm_medium=ios . I have a lot of exploring to do, especially because I want to not just tread the same white Regency England path. Excited to see what you pick up! Also, if you need a beta reader for that figure skating romance ….. 😍
I haven't but that looks fascinating! I definitely want to read some medieval romance and some more Jeannie Lin, whose Pingkang Li mysteries I really loved. And I quite liked Forbidden, if you haven't picked up that Beverly Jenkins yet!
Really love the idea of digging into a series!! It’s been so long since I’ve found something I loved. Also the deep dive into your favorite genres history - I’m around faculty all day and I’m always so impressed by the depth of their knowledge, so how good would it feel to be an expert in something you love..
Exactly! It's something I've always wanted to learn more about, especially when I hear other readers in my romance bookclub talk about their older favorites.
I can't really make any firm reading resolutions because perimenopausal brain fog hit me hard last year and absolutely scuppered all reading plans I had! But I would like to read the Lisa Kleypas Wallflowers series that gets so much love, which I thought fitted your romance canon criteria too but I just checked and it's much more recent than I realised! And I want to read more non-fiction again. I did really well with that in 2023 but failed miserably last year, so we'll see.
I *love* the Wallflowers series--seriously, I could write thousands of words about Devil in Winter--and I am actually planning on reading some books from the 2000's, like Nalini Singh and Jennifer Crusie.
My reading resolutions are: to keep up with my reading in a year project, read my set number of books for the year, and try to finish a couple of my favorite author catalogs
I have always loved Georgette Heyer’s regency romances written in the 1940’s. I expect romance writing from the 1970’s - 1980’s would seem really dated to our current sensibilities.
I've read two Georgette Heyers, one of which I did really enjoy (Cotillion), but want to pick up more this year, since I think she was deeply influential on historical romance.

I have not but I would really like to dig into some of those 70's titles, especially considering how important they are to the genre's history!

I really liked Forbidden! The next in the series, Breathless, is what I just read and IMO, it went completely off the rails in the last 10%.
Yes to more cat photos 😻 I love your first goal to go more all in on romance and I look forward to seeing how it goes and your recs that come from it!
The cat is 95% my boyfriend's cat but I'm working hard to win him over, haha. And thank you, I'm super excited to dig more into deep romance backlist!

Those sound fabulous! Being an author completionist is such a satisfying feeling.

I need to continue on with the Cazalets this year! And I cannot wait to read your figure skating romance one day!
Yes, it's such a satisfying family saga! And thank you!
